TWO Swindon care homes have been rated ‘good’ by inspectors after surprise visits earlier this year.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) the independent regulator of health services in England, praised the staff and management at Bluebells Care Home, Moredon Road and Fitzwarren House, Kingsdown Road.

Inspectors at Bluebells found residents being supported in a caring, professional and friendly manner.

“Staff received regular training and were knowledgeable and skilled. There was a clear staffing structure in place and staff were aware of their roles and responsibilities,” said the report.

Fitzwarren House received equal approval, with inspectors saying: “People and families praised the staff for their caring nature, compassion and humanity.”

One resident said: “We couldn’t have found a better place. All of the care staff are worth their weight in gold.”

Bluebells, which cares for up to 13 people while Fitzwarren House provides accommodation for up to 60 people.

Allison Turner, care coordinator at Bluebells, said: “We were very pleased because staff have been working exceptionally hard. They are very committed and without them we would not be able to provide such a high level of care.

“We are only small compared to other care homes, but we’re unique and this report shows we’re heading in the right direction.”

She added: “There’s still room for improvement, but we’re really proud of the team.”

One Bluebells resident said: “I’m very happy here. It’s better than hospital.”

Both care homes received an overall ‘good’ rating, with Fitzwarren rated ‘outstanding’ in the ‘Is the Service Caring?’ category.

Noleen Dermody, deputy manager at Fitzwarren House, said: “All our hard work has paid off. People sometimes have bad impressions of care homes, but we’ve shown just how good they can be. We have very high standards and the staff meet them every day. Whenever people come to look around they’re always really impressed.”

Both reports highlighted how care was tailored to suit each individual and that people were treated with dignity and respect.

“People received a choice of food that they enjoyed. Their weight and nutritional needs were monitored and appropriate action was taken when necessary. People told us they were happy with the service and how their support was provided,” said the Bluebells report.

One member of staff said: “We don’t see people as a room number. We treat them how I’d like my grandfather to be treated.”

Inspectors said of Fitzwarren House: “People received timely support to meet their health care needs and the nursing and care staff were focused on how the person wished their care and support to be given."
