MEENA Chivers, who was jailed last year for assaulting her husband, has been banned for from teaching.

The 42-year-old, of Highworth, hit Paul Chivers over the head with a hairdryer, leaving him needing eight stitches, and later with a cat bowl.

She denied a charge of unlawful wounding and common assault but was sent to prison for 16 months after being found guilty at Swindon Crown Court.

Following this, a professional conduct panel of the National College for Teaching and Leadership last month ruled she should be banned from teaching at any school for an indefinite period.

A report from the hearing said: "Although the panel finds the evidence of Mrs Chivers' teaching proficiency to be of note, the panel has found the seriousness of the offending behaviour that led to the conviction is relevant to Mrs Chivers' ongoing suitability to teach, not least because this took place in front of a child."

The report was then passed on to a representative of the government, who also confirmed the ban should be put into effect immediately.

In response, they said: “Due to the serious nature of this case and for the reasons set out above, I agree with the panel’s recommendation, that a prohibition order should be imposed and that no review period should be allowed.

“This means that Mrs Meena Chivers is prohibited from teaching indefinitely and cannot teach in any school, sixth form college, relevant youth accommodation or children’s home in England.

“Furthermore, in view of the seriousness of the allegations found proved against her, I have decided that Mrs Chivers shall not be entitled to apply for restoration of her eligibility to teach.”

At the time of the incident, Mrs Chivers was teaching Fitzharry’s School in Abingdon.

During last year’s hearing, the court heard how the marriage had been under strain and after a stressful day at work in March 2014, Mr Chivers had gone straight to bed. This upset his wife who confronted him.

After she made a series of spiteful comments he snapped and 'bumped' her off the bed. Mrs Chivers then turned violent, before telling him she had calmed down.

But she had not, ripping a hair drier from the wall and swinging it round, bringing it down on his head.

He took himself to hospital, and when he got back bedded down on the sofa so as not to bother her, but in the morning she renewed hostilities and hit him with the cat bowl.
