ELDENE Drive remains  closed this evening after construction workers encountered problems mending a burst pipe.

The road surface near Thorne Road was ruptured due to a burst pipe on Sunday, which caused a closure of a section of the road.

The road was then reopened last night but shut again today due to difficulty navigating a gas main close to the burst pipe. One side of the road will be re-opened tomorrow afternoon with temporary traffic lights put in place.

Drivers have been advised to access Eldene Drive via Dorcan Way.

A Thames Water spokesman said: “We’re sorry for any disruption our work to fix a burst water pipe is causing.

"We’ve had to take our time and plan the job carefully so we don’t disturb a gas main which is close to our pipe.

"The job is progressing well and we hope to have the pipe fixed tomorrow morning. We’ll then be able to reopen one side of the road while we fill in the hole we’ve dug and lay new road surface.

"There will be temporary traffic lights in place for a couple of days while we do this.”

A Swindon Borough Council spokesman said: “Eldene Drive has been closed at the junction with Thorne Road to allow Thames Water to carry out emergency repairs following the recent burst water main.

"We are waiting for an update from Thames Water as to when the road will be reopened but, in the meantime, motorists can access Eldene Drive by using the diversion route via Dorcan Way.”
