A FATHER of two who managed to fit his college studies in with his work and family life has won an apprentice of the year award.

Plumber Daniel Ricketts, aged 26, was one of 19 students from Swindon College who were recognised at a prize giving ceremony.

Daniel, who had been encouraged by his employer DW Dunn Ltd to undertake an apprenticeship was named Plumbing Level 2 Apprentice of the Year.

He said: “I had to fit my apprenticeship at Swindon College and my work in with my family life – I am a dad to two girls.

‘’But I got it done, and it was manageable. I am now going to be doing my Level 3 at the college.”

Business Administration Apprentice of the Year Charly Hubbard was presented with her award by her boss at Diamond PA Services, Donna Redshaw.

“Charly is such a hardworking and conscientious member of our team, and this shines through with her college work also,” she said.

‘’Often when we are working she will pull evidence out to show her tutor and she is constantly looking for improvements, both at college and in the office.

She added: “I am truly honoured to have Charly as a member of Diamond PA Services and I am so proud to present her with the Award for Business Administration Apprentice of the Year 2016.’’

Another winner, Engineering Apprentice of the Year Eamon Hackett had impressed his employers with his workmanship.

Mike Harvey, his boss at EMCOR, said: ‘’Eamonn demonstrates a clear commitment to the training and his job, which is reflected in his level of workmanship and the way he fits in at the work place and at college.

“He will be an asset to EMCOR and will set very high standards for others to follow as he progresses through his career.’’

More than 100 guests, including Mayor of Swindon Eric Shaw and MP Justin Tomlinson, parents and tutors were at the college last week for the presentations to students in subjects ranging from brickwork and carpentry to business administration, hairdressing and accounting.
