ISABEL Goodwin likes to make sure her hair and make-up are perfect when she goes out, but now she is sporting a tomboy 'GI Jane' look.

The youngster took the brave step of having her long blonde locks shaved to raise money for a charity that provides real hair wigs for sick children.

Isabel, who lives in Covingham, smashed her original £400 fundraising target. So far she has managed to earn £640 for the charity and more money is yet to come in. Her new target is £800.

“She was so good, bless her. It was amazing,” said her proud mother Kelly yesterday.

“She looks beautiful, absolutely beautiful. My husband and I couldn’t be more proud.”

She said Isabel had heard about the Little Princess Trust and that people donated hair to make wigs for sick children.

“We had a conversation about it and I didn’t think anything of it but a couple of days later she said: ‘Would you mind if I did that?’”

Kelly wasn’t entirely keen on the idea. “I tried to put her off as much as possible, to be honest. She had quite a horrific year of bullying at school.”

Concerned that a headshave could mark her out as a bullying target again, she had to be persuaded by her daughter.

“We looked into it and went online and researched it quite a bit and Isabel was adamant that she wanted to do it,” she said.

“At the end of the day I decided there are a lot worse things she could be doing.”

So they arranged for family friend Jess Davies to cut Isabel’s hair so it could be turned into a wig and then shave off what was left.

Isabel’s hair was down to the middle of her back before Jess got to work, watched by her big sister Jessica and little brothers Harvey and Harry.

By the time he was done with the clippers her head had a distinctly military look.

“She was shocked, very shocked. She looks like GI Jane,” said her mum.

“But I think she was so proud that she has actually done it."

She said Isabel used to be a tomboy but recently had become much more interested in her appearance.

“She loves doing her hair and she likes to do make-up. She won’t go out if it doesn’t look right," said Kelly.

“I couldn’t have done it and the thought of shaving off all my hair would fill me with fear.”
