RUNNERS will be Doing It For Dan once again this month as the successful virtual race in memory of the 11-year-old comes back to town.

To honour Daniel Climance, who died in a road accident last year, the run will return for its second year, with hopes of raising thousands for road safety charity Brake and the Doing It For Dan charity,

Doing It For Dan, was a speedy success in 2015 with generous sprinters from Brazil, New Zealand, Qatar, Dubai and Switzerland signing up in their hundreds to race in memory of the Bridlewood Primary pupil.

The campaign proved so successful that throughout 2015, 1,000 people covered a combined distance of 5,000 miles, raising over £20,000 for Brake.

Doing It For Dan was launched by Claire Smart and her son and Dan’s best friend Callum, 12, who live in St Andrews Ridge. The pair are keeping their fingers crossed for similar fundraising success this year.

“What happened last year was totally unexpected, we never thought it would go as far as it did. As always we are so grateful for the support that was shown to us and we hope that we can do well this year,” said Claire.

“I always knew I wanted to bring it back for a second year and we are excited about doing it all again for Daniel.”

A virtual run is a race that can be held from any location with participants’ able walk, use the treadmill, or run in another race to raise money. Doing It For Dan runners have the opportunity to do a 5k or 10k run with all ages and abilities able to sign up.

The virtual run events will take place during Road Safety Week on November 21 to 27.

Donations will be split between Brake and the Doing It For Dan charity.

Last year the campaign saw Claire and Callum receive special recognition from then Prime Minister David Cameron and named Brake’s community fundraisers of the year.

Claire said: “It is keeping Daniel’s memory alive and raising money for the fantastic charity Brake which helps improve the safety of the roads.”

Brake promotes road safety awareness, safe and sustainable road use and effective road safety policies. They aim to completely stop road injuries and deaths.

Doing It For Dan raises money to help children and young adults realise their sporting dreams. It aims to help with grants to individuals and organisations. It was launched by Dan’s parents Helen Lucas and Stuart Climance in February.
