PUPILS from the Bradon Forest Radio team got a taste of a what it’s like to run a professional radio show after a session with Swindon 105.5’s Daniel Woodward.

The ex-Bradon Forest student returned to his former secondary school to offer the current team of 14 very enthusiastic Y7 students, and their Year 9 student technician, advice on show structure, intros and outros as well as interviewing tips.

The radio club’s head of media Kate Makinson said: “It went really well. The students were very enthusiastic and asked a lot of questions. He came to deliver some radio about how to change presenters, running orders, intros and outros.

“The idea is to make our show a little bit more professional and he came to give us a bit more guidance.

“The question asked the most was how many celebrities had Daniel met and interviewed. He’s met some of the stars from the panto at Wyvern Theatre and he’s going to interview someone from JLS this week.”

The student radio club meets every week on a Tuesday to write and broadcast their weekly magazine format show which is aimed at KS3.

The show was previously written by Mrs Makinson, but is now written by the students as they aim to create a more professional setting.

“In the past I used to script it quite carefully. But this year it’s them writing it and we try to have a range of things to put out each week. So we find something from the news each week, a global thing each week and something relevant to school as well, such as sports matches, bake offs, quizzes and competitions,” she said.

The 105.5 broadcaster, who left the school five years ago, was involved with the radio club when he was a student, and has been a presenter on Corinium Radio and Cirencester Hospital Radio.

Daniel will return to provide more training to students and possibly bring a voice over artist who will create the school’s own jingle.

Mrs Makinson added: “The students found hearing about life in a professional studio very inspiring and are looking forward putting into practice all of his ideas.”

Following the visit, the radio club is planning a trip to the radio station next year, so the students can experience a real show firsthand.
