AN ALLEYWAY behind Manchester Road has been plagued by smelly rubbish which is yet to be cleared despite many residents complaining to the council.

Unwanted beds, sofas, tyres and even a toaster have been dumped in the growing pile over the course of the last week with much of the junk starting to give off a rather unsavoury smell, according to one resident.

The 32-year-old, who has lived in the area for seven years, first complained to Swindon Borough Council a week ago but said they feel their complaint has fallen on deaf ears.

“Residents are totally fed up with this area now because people are doing this,” they said.

“The rubbish has never been like this before and now it is getting worse because it has been left for so long.

“The stuff they are throwing away should be taken to the tip and not here and the alleyway is totally blocked.

“When I walk down the alleyway with my baby girl, she said she is scared to go that way because of the rubbish and how it smells. It is just horrible.

“It is not nice to have it all on your doorstep and most of the shops are fast food takeaways or convenience stores and they are putting their rubbish at the back in the alleyway and it is all starting to smell from where it has been left for so long.”

The council told residents that action would be taken within 10 days to tidy up the alleyway but Swindon Borough Council were unable to comment on when they would collect the rubbish before the Advertiser went to print.

The resident added that if the fly-tipping continues, they would be inclined to move elsewhere as the unwanted rubbish is creating a bad image for the area.

“Manchester Road is becoming a commercial area and not a residential one anymore because all of these new shops which we don’t need," he said.

“I would hate to move but we have considered it. Our family and friends all live in this area so I wouldn’t want to move just because of this but it is getting bad.

“I think some of the people might be moving houses and this is why there are sofas and beds there. Maybe they think someone will take it away like the council but they haven’t and it has got wet in the rain and is starting to smell.”
