AFTER watching a heart-breaking story on Children in Need about a little boy who lost his leg, five-year-old Evie-Mai Morris burst into tears wanting to help.

With that determination, the youngster has a lightbulb moment and immediately set about organising her own fundraiser at Nythe Primary which took place yesterday (Nov 25).

Selling hundreds of hand-decorated biscuits, Evie-May managed to surpass all of her expectations and raised £65 – something which her mum Karen said she was incredibly proud of.

“We watch Children in Need every year but it was this one story that she got rather upset about it and asked if we could send some money to help,” the 39-year-old explained.

“I spoke to her about how people raise money for charity and it was from talking to her about when I was younger and how I did a cake sale that must have got her thinking.

“It is funny because I did the almost exact same thing from sat watching Children in Need when I was her age and being inspired to help other people. I explained what I did and she asked whether she was allowed to sell things in school and after we got permission there was no stopping her.

“When she suggested selling biscuits, well, it completely took me by surprise that she had thought about it that much and it was the fact she wanted to do something for others which was lovely because a lot of children live quite privileged lifestyles these days.”

After making nearly 200 biscuits, Evie-Mai, along with the help of her siblings Chloe, 17, Kai, 14 and Ellie, 11, managed to hand-decorate each and every one all with spotty chocolatey decorations to tie in with this year’s CiN theme.

Karen added: “She even made her own little posters to stick up around the school to let people know it was on and the teachers really got behind the fundraiser by letting her actually hold it at the end of the school day.

“Fundraising for causes like Children in Need is one thing they should do more in schools because the children love doing things like baking or dressing up and as a family, we always watch Red Nose Day or Comic Relief but a lot of the time, the kids think the money goes abroad and many don’t know how much it helps people here in the UK as well.

“We’re so proud and as Evie-Mai grows up, I hope she realises that she can always help other people no matter what and hopefully that will inspire other children to do something whether it is fundraise or donate. If every child raised a pound it would make such a difference.”

Nythe Primary did their bit on Children in Need by allowing pupils to dress up in spotty clothing and they will also donate some of the takings at their Christmas fete on December 15 to the charity. Nationally, Children in Need managed to raise £46.6 million this year.
