A MAN in his 40s was viciously attacked by a group of men yesterday as he walked in the Toothill area.
Wiltshire Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident at about 6pm.
A spokesman said the victim in his forties was walking along Flint Hill, close to the junction of Idovers Drive, when he was approached and assaulted by a number of males.
The group punched and kicked the man causing serious injuries to his head and face; he was subsequently taken to hospital by ambulance.
He is currently in a stable condition.
Det Sgt Becky Smart said: "This was a violent and sustained attack and seemingly unprovoked.
"Given the time of day, someone must have heard or seen something.
"I urge anyone who witnessed this assault or who has any information relating to this to come forward and speak to us."

Three men aged 17, 19 and 21 from Swindon were arrested on suspicion of causing GBH and are currently in custody.
