POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a serious assault on a man in Swindon on Wednesday.

A large area around Transfer Bridges junction was taped off from early morning until mid-day while police carried out an investigation.

A man in his 20s is currently in hospital in a stable condition.

Det Sgt Scott Anger said today: Firstly, I would like to reassure the local community that we are carrying out a thorough investigation into this incident.

"We are appealing for the public's assistance to help us trace those responsible.

"We would like to hear from anyone who heard or saw anything suspicious in the area at this time. In particular, we are especially interested in anyone who may have seen an altercation in the area involving a small group of men, or maybe you were in the area after the incident took place - did you see a man on his own looking injured?

"The roads around the Transfer Bridges are busy - if you were driving through the area and have a dash cam, you could potentially have footage which could help our investigation.

"Any information you have, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem, please get in touch."

The Transfer Bridges junction was the scene of another serious attack earlier this year when three men were taken into custody by police after two people were stabbed on the footpath on the evening of Monday, September 5.

A 38-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man from the Swindon area received stab wounds to their abdomens. Police arrested three men from Swindon on suspicion of causing grevious bodily harm.

Anyone with information about Wednesday's attack is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
