POLICE are investigating an incident where a 16-year-old boy was assaulted with a hammer by another boy in North Swindon on Monday afternoon.

The assault is believed to have happened around 3.30pm on the roundabout at the junction with Redhouse Way and Millgrove Street.

The 16-year-old, believed to be a pupil at Isambard Community School, received a cut to the back of his head causing non-life changing/threatening injuries during the incident.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics who later took him to hospital. The boy was released soon after.

A 14-year-old from Swindon was arrested on suspicion of causing GBH and has been released on conditional bail.

Det Sgt Graham McLaughlin said: "We are appealing for witnesses to this incident, please contact Swindon CID if you heard or saw anything suspicious in this area at this time yesterday.

"I want to reassure everyone in the local community that this incident is being investigated and enquiries are on going.

"I would ask that if anyone witnessed anything and has not yet made contact with police then please do so; likewise if any person has mobile phone footage of the incident please contact Swindon CID.

"As a result of this incident, officers from the local community policing team will be conducting additional patrols in the area; if anyone has any concerns then please speak with the local officers and PCSOs during their patrols."
