TAYLOR Wimpey has submitted an outline planning application to build up to 62 homes on Ambrose Field, adjacent to Croft Field.

The plans, which were first revealed earlier this year, have triggered significant opposition from local residents and councillors on both sides of the political divide.

The site is not allocated for housing in the Swindon Borough Local Plan and the fields in question form part of a rural buffer designed to help maintain Wichelstowe as a separate, coherent community with a sense of identity.

Old Town councillors are also concerned about the safety of the access to the development from Croft Road, and the impact of up to 120 more vehicles a day entering and leaving the site.

Coun Nadine Watts (Lab - Old Town), said: "It is disappointing that Taylor Wimpey have submitted this application. This site is outside the Local Plan and should act as a rural buffer between Old Town and Wichelstowe.

"The Local Plan is the principal planning policy document for Swindon. It sets out how much development the borough needs and identifies where, when, and how development will take place. The plan has been agreed by central government.

"It is accepted therefore that Swindon can meet its housing needs and obligations without building on this site.

"We have many concerns including the increase in traffic, the access to the development from Croft Road, negative impact on wildlife, increased risk of flooding and drainage issues. We would encourage local residents to contact us with their concerns.

"Once the application has been validated, we would urge local residents to write in with their objections."

Coun Watts' Conservative counterpart has also spoken out against the plans.

Coun Claire Ellis (Con - Old Town), said: "It is a bit of a nightmare. How can they want to build something where there is so much public objection?

"People are concerned about the sewage problem, the land is marshy and they are concerned about the traffic which will snarl up Croft Road.

"This is not part of the local plan and should not be allowed to happen."
