EVEN the firefighters joined in the line dancing fun on Friday.

Staff at Morrison’s Dorcan Way superstore let their hair down last week to raise money for children’s cancer care.

The supermarket boasted an old fashioned fete-style atmosphere, laying on traditional games like hook-a-duck, craft stalls, live music and dancing.

Enthusiastic dancers from group M4 Stompers showed families the basics of line dancing.

And firefighters from Swindon’s Drove Road fire station – there to show delighted children round their fire engine – were left laughing by the sight of their boss joining in the cowboy dancing fun.

Leanne Hyde, community champion at the Dorcan Way Morrison’s store, said: “I want to say a fantastic thank you for the firefighters who came out.

“All the firefighters put money in my collection tin to get their boss to come and join in with the dancing.”

The event saw members of the store, their family members and regular customers make some stunning craft creations, including cakes and jumpers, for other customers to take away.

Traditional games proved popular among the children making the most of the final fortnight of their summer holidays.

Leanne said: “Hook the duck seemed to be the most important for the young children we had.”

Another game, which involved flinging toilet rolls into a mock lavatory did not seem to go down so well with kids – which came as a surprise to Leanne.

The event raised £565 for children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent.

But that figure would be doubled by Morrison’s bosses, Leanne said – taking the grand total to over £1,100.

She said: “We’ve all been touched by cancer in one way or another. When it’s a child it’s even harder to deal with.”

The Dorcan Way store, which also supports the Brighter Futures appeal to get a cancer-fighting radiotherapy unit at Great Western Hospital, plans to run more community fundraising events in the future.
