OXFORDSHIRE'S leading conservation charity will use a major conference next month to shine a spotlight on unsustainable farming.

The Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) will use the event at Oxford Brookes University to say that modern farming practice is the primary reason for the steady decline in wildlife in the UK.

Economist Dieter Helm will chair a debate on the subject at the Future of Food, Farming and Nature Conference on Saturday, October 14.

BBOWT chief executive Estelle Bailey said: "The ways in which our countryside will be managed for food production and for wildlife post-Brexit are very uncertain.

"We do know there will be dramatic changes to the current system of subsidies from the Common Agricultural Policy; and it is vital that farmers are supported financially to enable them to restore and create more wildlife-rich landscapes.

"I look forward to some tough questions from people who care about the future of our countryside."
