CHARITABLE employees from Swindon’s McDonald’s restaurants came together to give the Weir Field girl guiding hut in Wroughton a much-needed makeover.

The team, consisting of 13 business managers and McDonald’s franchisee Carl Room, spent the day giving the building a much-needed spruce up by repainting all of the windows, ceilings and doors in the building’s community areas as well as cleaning out the gutters and installing new cabinets and storage.

The girl guiding hut hadn’t been upgraded for 20 years.

Franchisee Carl Room, who owns and operates the McDonald’s restaurants in Swindon, said: “I was really proud to see everyone come together and help out.

“The building provides a space for local guides to meet, make friends and learn new skills, and so is an important space in our community. It’s a key priority of ours to ensure that the areas local to our restaurants remain an enjoyable place to live, work and visit. As a business, we understand the important role that we play in making the area a better place.”

As well as helping out in the Swindon community, McDonald’s restaurants patrol the streets at least three times a day to collect all litter that has been discarded, regardless of its origin.

Crew members across the UK cover a total of 3,000 miles each week on litter patrols, which equates to 150,000 miles a year and the distance of five marathons each year per store.

Keep Britain Tidy chief exec Allison Ogden-Newton said: “To win the war on litter everyone needs to work together, with businesses having a part to play. McDonald’s Love Where You Live initiative, together with their day-to-day commitment to tackling the problem through their litter patrols and their support to Keep Britain Tidy, is an example of how a business can make a real difference.”
