CARERS should take advantage of a free flu jab, health chiefs have said.

The vaccination is also offered free-of-charge to those over 65, pregnant women and people with long-term health conditions like diabetes and asthma.

Susanna Jones, chief executive of Swindon Carers' Centre, said: “Often, people in a caring role put their own health needs last.

“We are urging all carers to protect their own health, as well as the health of the person or people they care for, by ensuring they have a free flu jab this autumn.

"There are many ways to access the vaccination so it is convenient for you."

And Rosie Cole, a carer and trustee at Bath and North East Somerset Carers’ Centre, added: “One winter I fell really ill, which made me very anxious that I might not be able to fulfil my caring role.

“I urge anyone in a caring capacity to protect yourself this winter and have the free flu vaccination without delay.”

A highly infectious virus, flu can lead to serious complications for those with long-term health conditions like bronchitis or liver disease.

Dr Peter Mack, clinical chair at Swindon Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Whilst flu is usually a self-limiting illness, it can be very dangerous and cause serious complications for vulnerable people.”
