A WROUGHTON girl could hold onto her place in TV’s X Factor – but only if she’s been able to secure Swindon’s vote.

Shania Carvey faced eviction from the smash ITV music show over the weekend, as judge Simon Cowell told the 19-year-old’s girl group they narrowly missed out on getting through to the next round.

Ahead of the decision, Shania, who sings with girl group Lemonade, said: “There’s absolutely nothing else we want to do with our lives. To have that taken away from us would be absolutely soul destroying.”

But on Sunday, viewers watched as music mogul Simon told Lemonade: “I have got to know you. I like you. I think the public are going to like you. But the problem is I only have three places.

“I think any other year you would sail through. But this has been more competitive than I thought.”

However, Shania and her Lemonade were left fizzy after being given a last-minute reprieve.

They had 16 hours to clock up as many votes as possible, in a three-way battle to be the wildcard entry to the X Factor live shows.

Shania, who went to the same college as former Swindon X-Factor star Jahmene, said she was “devastated and shocked” Lemonade didn’t make it through the Judge’s Houses phase of the competition with their rendition of Hannah Grace’s Praise You.

“Everything came crashing down, until we were told we had a chance of being a wildcard,” said Shania.

“I want to do my hometown proud, bring the band with me and put Swindon on the map.”

She said that her bandmates, who she only met through the X Factor, were like “sisters”.

“This process has brought us closer than ever,” she added.

The Wroughton-born youngster, who studied at Ridgeway School and New College, moved away to Brighton and London at 18 in order to study music.

However, she has fond memories of Swindon’s thriving arts scene.

Shania said: “I loved the big arts festivals and events in Swindon over the summer, and everyone loves music and creative projects there.

“I did the dance course at New College and was in close proximity to performing arts students, which motivated me to go to music school.”

It was R&B star R Kelly’s hit The World’s Greatest that inspired Shania to follow her heart and pursue a music career.

But with bandmates in Lemonade, she said that they have a broad range of influences.

“We want to be ourselves and take inspiration from lots of different artists – Beyoncé, Prince, Mariah Carey - and find our own niche,” Shania said.

Viewers will have to wait until the X Factor Live Shows, which start on Saturday, to find out if Lemonade made it through.
