POLICE are taking no chances ahead of this afternoon’s Newport County clash.

Officers kitted out with riot helmets are stationed at Swindon railway station, out side the Sir Daniel Arms and along Regent Street.

A mobile CCTV van has been parked outside the station, while a police dog unit has also been posted to the town centre.

The precautions come as Swindon Town take on Newport County at Swindon’s County Ground for the first time in 30 years.

Officers in the town centre said they expected that up to 1,000 fans were expected to travel up to Swindon for the League Two match.

Ahead of the game Wiltshire Police urged fans to stay safe.

Match Commander Superintendent Sue Austin said: “Three points for Swindon Town isn’t the only priority on Saturday. We want to make sure that everyone gets home safe.

“We are working closely with our partner agencies, including Swindon Town and Newport County, to make this a safe experience for all while reducing the impact of this event on the community.

"The public may notice an increased police presence before, during and after the match. This is to maintain public safety whilst minimising community disruption”.

Home supporters can buy tickets on the day but entry will be by advance ticket only for away fans

The Great Western Pub and The Savoy will be accepting away fans and all supporters are encouraged to get to their seats as early as possible due to the large crowd being expected
