TWO charities have been presented with cheques after a year of fundraising activities by locals.

On Friday, a cheque for £9,073 and £8,898 was handed to The Nelson Trust and Swindon Women’s Aid, respectively, in a special ceremony at the Tawny Owl in North Swindon.

Organised by Swindon Cares, the cash was handed over in the presence of Mayor Maureen Penny and The High Sheriff of Wiltshire Lady Marland.

James Arkell, chairman of Swindon Cares, couldn’t attend, so Nick Arkell stood in his place.

Nick said: “We have raised a fantastic amount of money this year and it’s fantastic to be able to split it between these two brilliant charities.

“Swindon Cares is all about making a difference and it’s great that we can do that with this money that has been raised.”

The Nelson Trust assists vulnerable people in the community who have complex and sensitive needs.

Kate Lewis, outreach co-ordinator at the trust, said: “The money that is being given to us today will be used for a specialist IT suite so people can have better access to support and employment opportunities.”

Swindon Women’s Aid, established in 1975, provide refuge for vulnerable women and children in Swindon and victims of domestic violence.

Director Olwen Kelly said: “Domestic abuse is a serious issue, and still a massive problem for so many people. We are hoping to reverse that with the work we do.

“It’s great to know we are making a difference and we are very grateful for your support. Thank you, and God bless you.”
