TAW Hill residents were outraged after plastic was blown across his street by Storm Georgina from bin bags which hadn't been collected by the council.

A number of neighbours were left irate after seeing the waste collection team piling up the bags at the end of Doyle Close on Friday instead of collecting them as usual.

On resident, who wished to be known only as Anthony, then complained to the council online and asked for the bags to be collected on Saturday.

He received a reply saying that they will be collected on Monday morning.

However, Monday morning came and went and no-one showed up.

During the afternoon, strong gusts of wind blew bottles all over the road and pavement which Anthony and a small group of neighbours had to tidy up.

The winds continued throughout the night and made even more of a mess as Storm Georgina blustered her way across the UK.

The recycling bags were finally collected on Tuesday morning but the debris was left for someone else to sort out.

Anthony said: "I'm disappointed, they just left it piled up, then plastic was blown all over the street.

"Me and half a dozen neighbours went around picking some of it up and putting it back in the bags, then overnight there was more wind and we didn't have time, there's only so much we can do.

"When they did come to collect the bags they didn't clean up the can't believe they've just left the rest of it scattered and strewn along the street.

"There's probably a good reason they didn't collect it on Friday but surely they have a contingency plan, and they said they'd collect it up on Monday, I have proof."

Yesterday, a Swindon Borough Council spokesman said: “The plastic waste was put into a pile ready for collection but, unfortunately, it was inadvertently missed off the ensuing collection round.

“We would like to thank the resident for reporting this error to us and for also helping to clear up any stray plastic along with his neighbours.

“Our team collected the waste this morning but our crew missed some of the plastic that was blown away by the wind.

"We will make arrangements for any errant waste to be collected.”

All the leftover plastic was quickly collected and the road is now clear of litter.

Anthony added: "We are grateful that it's been resolved, this is the sort of service you expect from the council, to keep the streets of Swindon clean.

"I just wish it had been done a bit sooner."
