THE council’s attempts to fill potholes in a street resembling Swiss cheese have been deemed unacceptable by residents.

West Swindon parish councillor Suresh Gattapur, who has lived in Westlea for the past 14 years, has had enough of the “botched” attempts to fix the holes and has demanded the council “do a proper job”.

Suresh says that whenever council workers come out to fill the holes, it is only a matter of time before they reappear, sometimes even worse than before.

“This has been going on for at least seven or eight years now. Whenever the potholes get filled and the weather changes, they crumble and come back.

“These potholes damage car tyres and are a hazard. I think the council should look to more permanent solutions, because what they are doing now isn’t working.”

Suresh added that, with the proposed 4.99 per cent council tax increase that will likely be introduced for the coming financial year, there is an even greater need for the council to tackle things of this nature.

At a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Haydon Wick resident Roy Worman asked councillors: “When the council comes out to fill potholes, why don’t they do it properly?”

Responding, Coun Keith Williams said: “In order to make a permanent repair, we need the weather conditions to be just right.

“What often happens is we make a temporary repair because the conditions are not suitable. We will then return at a later date to complete the repair.”

The council confirmed that an emergency repair had been carried out in Woodchester.

A spokesman said: “Although the repair may appear unsightly, it has been undertaken using an extremely durable material, which is designed to be placed in to potholes until a full repair is completed.

“A more permanent repair will be carried out in the next few weeks.”
