A community of more than 100 boxing enthusiasts have found a new town centre home thanks to donations from local philanthropists.

Horseshoe Amateur Boxing Club, currently based in Gipsy Lane, is moving to new, larger premises above Iceland in the town centre, and changing their name to the Brunel ABC in honour of the new location.

Among those to give a donation to the club were Abdul Amin, owner of the Lalbagh restaurant in Rodbourne Road, who gave £300 towards the refurbishment.

Brian Roberts, who runs the boxing club, said: "The building’s been derelict for two years I believe – they used to have it as a laser quest. We’ve come quite a long way in the eight weeks, but it’s starting to take shape.

"We’re coming to a place where we can see the finish in sight, but how far we’ve come, it’s fantastic.

"It’s going to open up doors for us. It’s three times bigger than what we had, and it’s in the centre of town: it opens up all the area around us.

"We’ve had to rip all the electrics out – it’s cost us over £7,000 in electrics, and plumbing is going to be about the same. We still haven’t done the toilets yet, and the showers, so there’s still some distance to go in the fundraising."
