SOME rail replacement bus services connecting Swindon with the wider rail network have been cancelled due to the "parlous" state of the road network around the town.

Trains running through Swindon have been suspended this weekend due to planned engineering works on the line, with replacement bus services organised to run between Swindon and Chippenham, as well as Didcot Parkway, Westbury and Gloucester.

But on Sunday morning, GWR advised all passengers travelling on its network that due to severe weather fewer trains are able to run, and some replacement bus services may also be affected.

Earlier this morning the train operator announced that rail replacement buses operating out of Swindon had been cancelled, but it is understood that buses are now running between Swindon and Chippenham/Westbury/Didcot/Reading, with delays to services, but no buses are running to Gloucester.

A spokesman for GWR said: "Train services running across the whole Great Western Railway network may be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.

"Due to heavy snow overnight across the Great Western Railway network, some services are expected to be cancelled, delayed or revised. Customers are advised not to travel as where trains are cancelled, road transport will not be provided due to the poor road conditions.

"Note also that road transport previously advertised to operate in place of rail services in connection with improvement works is unlikely to be able to operate and subject to delay, cancellation and curtailment at short notice.

"Customers with unused tickets dated for today are able to use their tickets on Monday, March 19."
