A PUB manager and his mother produced a barnstorming performance at The Plough Inn last month as part of their live music fundraiser in aid of the Lung Foundation.

Bands and bar staff joined together at the Old Town pub and raised over £750 in memory of Dan Rose’s grandparents who both died from lung disease.Plough Manager Dan Rose said: “We had all different types of music – rock, pop, but mostly acoustic. Everyone loved it and enjoyed it. Me and my Mum collaborated with local act Sweet Nightingale and performed a cover of Dolly Parton and Kenny Roger’s song Islands in the Stream.

“My grandparents Kenneth and Pauline passed away to COPD, a lung disease that makes it difficult to breathe. They loved having us around all the time. They did so much for us.

“We wanted to give something back because we got so much support from the people at the hospital. We chose the Lung Foundation as that’s the one that connects with us most.”

The pub raised £600 with a similar event last year, but with the help of blues performer Bob Bowles and a host of musicians belting out numbers from midday until late evening, the latest music night on March 18 exceeded that total.

Michelle Rose, mother of Dan and keen staff member at The Plough, said: “People had a whale of a time. They had to walk past the pub because it was so packed. We couldn’t have done it without the bands.

“Me and Dan hadn’t performed together before, it was just a one-off thing and we wacked a song out. We thought, ‘gosh, what are we going to do,’ but we got on with it. I thought we were pretty good if I don’t say so myself.”

She added: “Ken and Pauline were a very loving couple – they took care of my brother’s children when he passed away.

“Music is in the family – Ken did yodelling locally.”

The total raised at the event was made entirely through customer donations. Entry to the pub was free for those who were lucky enough to get in before the venue reached full capacity.
