When Geoff met Ken it was a comedic partnership made in heaven - they had so much in common!

Geoff was born in Yorkshire, Ken in Swindon, there is a 30 year age gap, Geoff went to university, Ken was educated at Sanford Street School, which he says was so rough in his day that “If you had teeth you were a sissy”.

Geoff is a high powered senior executive and Ken is a builder, one votes Labour the other would have: ‘voted for Margaret Thatcher,’ but together on stagethe comedy double act simply spark off each other, and draw their audience into their mad mad world..

So, For One Night Only these popular Swindon entertainers are back together at the Arts Centre with a show bursting at the seams with comedy sketches, some new and some old favourites, including the evergreen gardening sketch.

“We never notice the age gap or anything else,’’ said Geoff. “Ken is a different generation and political correctness passed him by, so sometimes I am afraid we will both get locked up, but our writing is all word play which has a certain innocence, and there is no bad language or anything explicit.’’

The two comedians were staunch members of the Swindon musical drama group, Stage Struck, for many years. Ken joined six months after it first started and is still in the spin off called The Cast of Stage Struck. Geoff and his wife Jane were at the helm of Stage Struck, writing and directing the shows. Ken and Geoff began their double act in 1991 but have not performed together since the curtain came down on Stage Struck two years ago.

Geoff has been busy writing pantomimes, despite swearing he had hung up his wig for good, including the Princess and the Dragon, Spooky Christmas and he is currently working on this year’s offering which is a Star Trek panto. Ken meanwhile has been singing with the Mid West Big Band, the U3A Orchestra and the Swindon Big Band and a quartet which includes Cliff Cross for tea dances.

“Ken is one of the most active singers in Swindon,’’ said Geoff. “He is a freak of nature in a good way and one of my best friends.’’

Back together the comedians have come up with this special show. “I create a skeleton and then Ken comes up with nonsense and it’s funny. With Ken it is almost all ad lib. I don’t know what he is going to say next, I let him go into flights of fancy and then jump us back to the schedule.’’

Also in One Night Only will be Geoff’s daughter, Danielle Marsh, who has just turned professional. She has been working with the Lincoln Hospital Band for the past few years. She will be singing a mix of Andrew Lloyd Webber songs, opera and even an Ed Sheeran number.

Also in the concert will be pianist Thomas Graff who has accompanied the singers in the last two of Geoff’s pantomimes. Geoff said: “Thomas is a superb classical pianist who performs his own recitals and he is so sensible and looks at Ken and I as if he doesn’t know what we are doing, but it makes it funnier for the audience.’’

One Night Only is on Sunday, May 6 at the Swindon Arts Centre. Tickets are £14 from 01793 524481 or visit www.swindontheatres.co.uk - Flicky Harrison
