IT’S been 15 years since Swindon brewer Arkell’s last built a pub.

But the Kingsdown firm has revealed it is bringing a new hostelry to Swindon’s huge Tadpole Garden Village development.

It is due to start the design work for the pub, which will serve the 1,855-home project, and hopes to have it open by the end of 2019.

Brewery director George Arkell said: “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to build a pub for the community.

“We’ve been rooted in Swindon for 175 years and it’s great to be able to make this announcement in our special anniversary year.

“We’re looking forward to starting work on the pub’s design and will be putting our years of experience and knowledge of Swindon to work.

“More than 15 years ago we began work on The Tawny Owl at Taw Hill, Swindon. It opened in 2003 and is one of our most successful Swindon pubs which is now at the centre of a thriving community.”

Tadpole Garden Village is being developed by Crest Nicholson.

Its strategic projects managing director Andrew Dobson said: “The pub will be a wonderful addition to our thriving new community.

“It’s great to be supporting a local business, especially one with such a strong heritage and links with the local area.

“We are looking forward to working with Arkell’s as the project develops.”

Arkell’s has hired Clark & Maslin from Malmesbury as architect and hopes to be able to submit ideas to borough council planners later this year.

The aim is to start building on site in early 2019 with a view to opening the pub at the end of next year.

Arkell’s owns just under 100 pubs in the south of England with the majority in Swindon and a dozen in Gloucester and Oxford.

It has been renovating some of its pubs with the latest one to get a makeover being Rudi’s in Old Town.

Tadpole Garden Village is one of Swindon’s major housing projects.

Crest Nicholson says the pub is one of a whole range of amenities planned for the site, including shops, a primary school and community sports facilities.
