MORE than 100 people relaxed in the scorching summer sunshine at St Joseph's Church.

The air was filled with music from the Wroughton Silver Band and announcements of raffle winners as a popular annual fundraiser for Prospect Hospice returned to the church grounds.

Anne Moss has organised the event since it began 15 years ago, with the help of Swindon Churches Together.

She said: "It's a lovely village event.

"This started as quite a small thing with just cream teas.

"Then it became quite well-known, the Wroughton Silver Band joined and have played for us for the past five years, then we added a raffle table.

"It's always held on the first Saturday of June, we've done very well and we've had good weather.

"We were a bit worried about rain before it started, but it's cleared up beautifully.

"You just cross your fingers and hope people come along, then suddenly you look around and there are huge crowds.

"It's attracted people from around the village and other churches.

"A few people wandering past have popped in to join us, too, including a couple from Bristol, which was nice."

In previous years, the event has raised a total of nearly £6,000 for the hospice, including £900 just from 2017's event.

This year, Anne's hoping to hit £1,000 in one day.

Judging from the number of crowded gazebos in the church's garden, the bags of money how busy the volunteers were serving refreshments and cakes, it looks like she just might do it.

Guests enjoyed a cream tea and a cuppa with friends and fellow Wroughton residents.

Anne added: "This is a huge group effort, with lots of volunteers helping out, washing up, serving the cream teas, baking scones and lending us parasols.

"I'd like to thank everyone who came here today and all the people who have worked so very hard to make it such a big success."
