A GANG of men put their 45-year-old victim in hospital after an early hours attack.

Police believe the man was attacked with a weapon, cutting his back and his face. He is currently being treatment in hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The fight took place in an alleyway between Corporation Street and Alfred Street at around 12.15am on Sunday, July 8. 

The scene was sealed off by police, with a forensics officer taking samples from a pool of what appeared to be blood on the forecourt of a Corporation Street car wash. The officer also collected fragments of glass.

Det Sgt Scott Anger said:  "This is a busy area of the town, so someone must have seen or heard  something suspicious. 

"We're appealing for anyone who may have witnessed an altercation between males in the area around midnight Saturday night (7 July) into the early hours of Sunday 8 July.   

"We are currently continuing our investigations and people may notice an increased police presence in this part of town."
