Incidents, accidents and some record breaking were all a feature of the final race meeting of the year at the Castle Combe Circuit on Saturday.

Heat one of the the Melton Concrete Products Formula Ford Carnival was a cracker. Pole man Josh Fisher, in the Mygale SJ01, led for the first two laps until the race was stopped after a four car pile-up at Camp.

The restart saw Fisher take the lead again, fending off Irish driver, Peter Barrable, who eventually succumbed to Bradford on Avon's Ed Moore. It was all change in the last two laps though, Moore finding a way past Fisher, Barrable doing the same, all three below the five year old lap record, but Moore the fastest, breaking it finally by over half a second.

Heat two saw 2005 carnival winner, Peter Dempsey, on the front row alongside his Irish brother, Keith. The pair made a break, but a charging Andy Jones from Castle Combe, who had qualified 4th fastest, was soon with Keith, ahead by lap 3. Meanwhile, Saltford's Steven Jensen was busy recovering from a slow start, gradually picking off his rivals, so that by the 7th lap, the Class B circuit champion was 2nd. With Peter D way ahead and taking the win by nearly 12 seconds, but unable to break the lap record, Keith was neck and neck with Jones, the two side by side into Camp and virtually as one as they crossed the line. Just .005 of a second separated them, Jones just ahead.

Veteran multiple champion, Bob Higgins led and won the last chance Formula Ford race with Bratton's Ben Norton probably the faster man, but there was no way the wily old Higgins would let him through.

Norton had to settle for second. Adam, son of Bob, brought his Van Diemen RF89 through from the back to finish seventh.

The final was as tense at it could be, Moore on pole courtesy of his fastest lap, with Peter Dempsey alongside, Barrable behind Moore and Jensen behind Dempsey.

After just one lap, an incident at Quarry brought out the safety car briefly, Dempsey making a usefully fast start to lead Barrable, Jensen and Moore until the entry to Camp on lap three when Moore and Jensen touched, sending the latter into the barriers.

Moore's car was damaged too, and another safety car emerged to bunch the field, Moore had to be content with the lap record, his Carnival over.

The restart saw Peter Dempsey, Barrable, Fisher and Keith D squabbling furiously. Dempsey stayed confidently ahead till the final tour, but Fisher was looking strong and a favourite for many.

Incredibly though, it was Barrable who emerged ahead to take the win, PD clearly disappointed to be runner up, with Fisher also thinking he deserved better, having lost out under yellow flags on the penultimate lap.

Jones in the Ray GRS07 claimed 6th, with Bob Higgins seventh and thirrd in class, his son second in class, which had been annihilated by Nelson Rowe who was a magnificent eighth overall.

Bath's Matt McKillop was fourth in class B in his Swift SC92.

The savesometax.co.uk Special GT Championship was split into two races, such was the size of the entry. Welsh driver, Steve Griffiths, put his Jade Chrysler on pole and zoomed off into a lead which he was never to lose. Front row man, Thomas Richardson in the Nemesis RME 02, held second for the first seven laps, but Bath's Guy Woodward was gradually recovering from his slow start, taking second in his new Andrews Jade Trackstar, only for the race to come under the Safety Car for three quarters of a lap.

This allowed Woodward to get close to Griffiths, with Richardson not giving up, but not quite fast enough. Nevertheless, Griffiths took the win, but Woodward was more than happy with his fastest lap on the debut of the new car. Richardson was the class B winner Cirencester's Rob Clarke in the Radical Clubsport took 6th overall and 4th in class B.

The class C and D race saw Bristol's Tony Michael in the Westfield SE and Trowbridge's Mark Funnell in the Lotus Exige share the front row, Castle Combe's Keith Sprules fastest class D runner, an impressive 5th overall in his Ferrari 360.

Michael was first away, but by Quarry, Funnell was ahead, the pair joined together for the next four laps until Funnell retired the Exige with engine problems, leaving Michael to take an easy victory.

Sprules was caught by class rival and 2007 champion, Duncan Cameron in his similar 360 from the back of the grid, the latter taking an impressive third overall, with Sprules second in class and fifth overall.

Calne's Tony Hutchings needed to win class C of the National Mobile Windscreens Saloon Car Championship and set fastest lap if he was to retain his 2006 title.

But he also needed his Turnpike Racing team-mate, Chippenham's William Di Claudio to win class D and get fastest lap. This would prevent Russell Poynter-Brown winning the class and the title.

The race was eventful to say the least. Hutchings seemed to have his class in the bag, but did not count on Paul Gardner in the Saxo, right on form for the first time this year. By lap eight, Gardner had found a way through, but Hutchings had still set the fastest lap. Meanwhile, further back, Di Claudio had been hounding Poynter-Brown, catching and passing him mid-race and also setting fastest lap.

As the leaders came by for the ninth time, the race was over, after Melksham's Simon Norris clipped the rear of the Peugeot 106 of back-marker Christina Lewis from Bristol.

The resulting accident was huge, Norris's Evo flipping and traveling through the air like a light plane. Luckily for the marshals on the other side, the new debris fence arrested the car, which landed on its roof, both drivers miraculously unhurt.

The race stoppage and eventual result put Hutchings and Poynter-Brown equal on points, the title going to Hutchings, with his greater number of wins.

Barry Squibb was the declared winner in his Evo 6 RS, Bristol's Mark Wyatt claiming class B with his Astra.

Another visiting Irish driver took victory in the Classic Formula Ford 1600 race, Rory Farrell totally dominant in his Crossle 30F despite a broken engine mounting.

Chippenham's Jonathan Loader claimed fourth overall in an elongated Sports 2000 Endurance race in his Gunn TS9
