A BURGLAR smashed into an electrical store and tried to steal thousands of pounds worth of electrical goods.

The thief smashed through the front window of Currys.digital in Regent Street early on Tuesday morning and grabbed about £3,000 worth of electrical goods from the store, before police were alerted by the automatic alarm.

And when staff arrived at work yesterday morning it was discovered the store had been targeted for the second time in two days.

Speaking about the first break-in, Insp Ian Bamber from Swindon police said: "We were alerted by the alarm just before 3am.

"Something had been thrown through the window to facilitate entry. We attended and found a male on the roof, who was arrested on suspicion of burglary.

"It was thought that around £3,000 of electrical items had been taken and a large quantity of the stolen property was located nearby.

"It is thought all of the stolen goods were recovered."

Sales staff at the shop said it was the second smash-and-grab raid in two nights.

Sales assistant Chris Langley said the robbers used a pipe to break in.

"It was the same both nights," he said. "I think they threw a piece of pipe or something through the window to get in then took some cameras."

Currys spokesman Christian Brekke said: "There have been a couple of incidents. The alarms went off at 3am on Tuesday. The alarm detects when the glass is broken and there was some damage to the glass.

"A similar thing happened again yesterday morning.

"It doesn't appear the alarm went off but it was discovered in the morning.

"The value of the goods taken is relatively low."
