A SWINDON theatre director has been appointed to a worldwide theatrical body.

Benedict Eccles, artistic producer of Swindon's only professional theatre company Sixth Sense, has joined the UK board of Assitej - the World Theatre Network of Theatre for Children and Young People.

Assitej was established in 1965 by a global alliance of professional theatre companies, and links thousands of theatres, organisations and individuals through national centres in more than 82 countries.

Benedict said he was delighted to the join the organisation, which he says has helped his own theatre group to thrive.

"I have been attending international theatre festivals organised by Assitej for several years so as to help increase the quality of the work we make for children in Swindon.

"The organisation's members consist of some of the best theatre companies in the world and I was very flattered to be asked to join the UK board of about 12 members.

"I believe that quality theatre should be made available to all children because it is a very accessible way for them to explore and celebrate their lives.

"At Sixth Sense, we have an ambition to produce quality productions and this association with the worldwide network will help us improve our work.

"In return, we hope to be able to help those countries which do not have a strong theatre and arts provision for children to develop their own companies and best practice.

"I think it is great that a Swindon arts organisation has been called on for its expertise to help the arts internationally."

Sixth Sense, based at the Wyvern, produces plays watched by up to 40,000 people each year and promotes theatre that helps young people explore issues important to them.

The theatre company produces both issue-based and creative theatre productions and performs in schools, theatres and arts centres in Swindon and the south west.

The productions are supported by additional young people-led work, workshops, training sessions and other additional production projects.

Benedict is directing Sixth Sense's next production in January, which will tour to about 75 local and regional primary schools and is based on The Rime of The Ancient Mariner.
