AN EXPLOSION at a block of flats forced four families out of their homes for Christmas.

The blast at an address in Stamford Close, Toothill, took place at about 7am on Sunday.

But a subsequent inspection of neighbouring properties saw health and safety teams deem four homes to be unsafe.

Swindon Council said it had offered to find alternative accommodation for those families affected.

A council spokeswoman said: "Staff have been working around the clock to make sure as many people as possible can return to their homes in time for Christmas.

"This is the case for the majority of residents and alternative accommodation has been arranged for residents of the four flats which are not accessible.

"Over the festive period the council will continue liaising with affected residents, who can receive additional support and information by calling 01793 466451."

Tales of heroism are continuing to be recounted in the aftermath of the explosion.

As reported in Monday's Adver, Scott Somerville was the first person out of the 12-flat block and immediately began raising the alarm to neighbours.

But he was not the only quick-thinking hero on hand.

Steven Warren climbed on a shed roof to help Anne-Marie Gibbs and Nigel Clayson.

Nigel said: "I knew we just had to get out.

"I opened the door to the hall and it was all dark and I couldn't see, so the safest thing to do was to climb through the kitchen window."

Lizzie Fraser, who lives in the flat below Ann-Marie and Nigel, said her pet dogs helped guide her to safety.

She said: "The dogs got me out as it was totally black and I couldn't see my way out of there.

"They got me to the door."

Crime scene investigators do not know what caused the blast and are still appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Police have confirmed they have arrested a man on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

The 44-year-old is believed to be Anthony Lowe, the resident of the exploded flat.

He has been placed under police guard at Frenchay Hospital's burns unit.

Police are keen to trace a man seen driving out of the close at the time of the blast in a white car.

Wiltshire Police spokesman Graham Chivers said: "That person could be a witness and we would like to speak to them in that light."
