The two codes of rugby got together on the field in Swindon on Sunday to play the game for one of their own.

Richard White, affectionately known as Troll, recently underwent major cancer surgery, resulting in a probable six-month at least recuperation period.

And when fellow players heard it was likely to mean a difficult time in supporting his wife Lisa and their young family they decided to pitch in and help with a fundraiser.

Troll played union for most of the local clubs over many years, before switching codes with Swindon St George Rugby League FC, where his cult status has been cemented for eternity, both on and off the pitch, said media secretary Barrie Matthews.

Several hundred turned out for the unique clash. St George’s league side took on an invitation team, with players from several local union clubs. The first half was played with league rules and the second under union laws. The day kicked off with a junior display of coaching and playing by Swindon RU club’s juniors and St George’s Little Leaguers.

Barrie said: " I personally lost track of the score, but every player I have subsequently asked about this also could not remember, indeed I was told that both referees had lost track of it themselves! One solution offered was that at least St George won the yellow card count by three to one. Anyway, the only score that really mattered was the amount raised."

Afterwards Richard said: "It’s just overwhelming and to see friends from across the Rugby community, along with my own family, I just cannot express fully enough my gratitude and my love to everyone."

So far just under £8,000 has been raised for the family. Donations can be made at justgiving.com/crowdfunding/trundlefortroll
