With the Queen's Platinum Jubilee looming on the horizon, Swindon Borough Council has looked back at Her Majesty's visit to the town fifty years ago.
The local authority posted photos from Swindon Library of the Queen's visit in 1971, her second visit to the town, but her first official visit as Queen.
In the photos, Swindon residents can be seen flocking the streets and waving Union Jack flags, crowds gathered with banners welcoming her to the town and excited smiling children lined up hoping to get a glimpse of royalty.
During this visit, she inaugurated the town's new Civic Centre, which also included the Wyvern Theatre. Due to the bad weather on the day she gave a short speech before announcing the centre open.
The Civic Centre was one of the town's biggest regeneration projects at the time, starting in 1965, but it ultimately ground to a halt. The main stage of the development, the Wyvern Theatre, may have been opened by the Queen, but the rest of it was never built.
This was because money started to run out and then over time development plans moved on to the Brunel Shopping Centre.
