THE countdown to a digital television revolution in Swindon has begun.

And people are being urged to start preparing for the changes now - as they will take place in the next two years.

Digital UK, the body charged with organising the switchover, says the current analogue signal will be switched off in 2010, forcing all homes to change to a digital signal.

The organisation says it will bring improved reception and more choice in television channels.

However, to facilitate the process, all televisions will need to be capable of receiving a new signal, either through a separate digital box or built in television box.

Digital UK has warned all users to be aware of three main things.

l Look for the digital tick' logo, which means it is designed to work after switchover l After switchover, VCRs and analogue DVD recorders will not be able to record one channel while another is being watched.

l And there is no need to buy a new television as virtually all sets can be converted for digital Readers can check whether they are able to receive a digital signal already by visiting Digital UK's website www.digitaluk.co.uk and entering their postcode.

The website also gives details of how to prepare before, during and after the switchover.

The latest research from Digital UK has found that in the West TV region, 90 per cent of people are aware that the switchover is happening, and 85 per cent have already converted their main television set.

Swindon, which falls into the West TV region, will be receiving its signal from the Mendip transmitter, which serves 794,000 households.
