AGEING the right way and why not to join a book club were the afternoon offerings at the literature festival yesterday.

Virginia Ironside was at the Arts Centre to discuss her latest book No! I Don't Want To Join A Book Club.

The author lamented the fact that all the books she had read relating to age focused on how turning old was so dreadful.

She spoke about how older people still wanted to keep believing they were in their 30s and that perhaps it was time to actually admit that being 60 wasn't being 30.

She also revealed that it had been surprising to learn that no fewer than six publishers had been vying for her book after they received the synopsis.

She said: "The book's been published in 15 countries, including Estonia and Korea, and God knows what they make of it."

She covered a variety of topics about growing old correctly.

What could and couldn't be worn, the pros and cons of being with someone rather than being alone and how not having sex anymore was a good thing, were just some of the matters under discussion.
