SANDWICHES and teddy bears were all part of the fun at Leapfrog Day Nursery during a special picnic.

The teddy bears' picnic was held on Wednesday as part of the nursery's celebration of National Sandwich Week, which runs until Saturday.

The nursery has run a number of activities to tie in with the week, including getting the children to make different kinds of sandwiches with French bread, white and brown bread and different fillings.

Morag Puffett, 33, deputy manager of the nursery, said: "It was a fun thing for the kids to do. We had a picnic in the grounds and also got the kids to bring in their teddy bears from home to make it more special.

"The older kids made different sandwiches all week for their tea, while the younger ones picked out their favourites from various fillings to use in their sandwiches.

"It's the first time we've done something like this but it's mainly so that the kids have something to do that's different.

"Also it was a change from having their lunch on tables.

"We had about 90 kids attend, between the ages of four months and five years, and everyone had a great time.

"We also took the opportunity to teach the children about healthy eating and nutrition. We talked to them about salads and what they could do to make their sandwiches healthy.

"I think because it was such a success this year, we will definitely be looking to do something again next year."
