How Swindon Borough Council will deliver its restoration plans for the Health Hydro in Milton Road will be the topic of discussion for members of a council committee on Thursday.

The council’s vision says the plan is much more than just about maintaining or restoring the Grade II*-listed building, but is part of putting the historic building, often cited as the model for the NHS, at the heart of a “healthier, happier Swindon”.

Phase one of a £6.5m restoration project begins on April 1 and the building will be closed to the public for up to 18 months to allow creation of a new gym and activity area, improvement of the changing rooms which would include making them accessible, and create direct access between them and Turkish baths, as well as replacement and upgrading of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.

The report to the committee says that won’t end there: “Completing phase one will act as a catalyst for future funding bids to restore the remainder of the Health Hydro, including the Turkish baths, small pool hall, dispensary and dry-side areas.

“Officers are in discussions with funding providers on phase two, which is expected to deliver improvements to the building fabric to reduce its energy costs.”

The growing the economy committee meeting starts at 6pm on Thursday at the Euclid Street civic offices.
