A total of 71 candidates are vying for just 19 seats on Swindon Borough Council at this year’s election.

There are candidates from five parties with two independents. The ruling Conservatives and the opposition Labour group have both fielded a full slate of 19 candidates, as has the Liberal Democrats.

The party has sometimes previously struggled to get sufficient candidates.

The Green Party has established itself as the fourth force in Swindon local politics, fielding candidates in 10 seats, more than 50 per cent.

The Trades Union and Socialist Coalition is putting up candidates in Covingham & Dorcan and Lydiard & Freshbrook, and there are independents in Central ward and Walcot & Park North
