A driver says she is avoiding a major Swindon roundabout after a "horrendous" crash with a cyclist.

The woman has hit out at the police for their "disgusting" handling of her case, and not pursuing a prosecution against the cyclist, who she says hit her.

Wiltshire Police breathalysed the woman in the incident, but did not take action against either party, and confirmed that the driver was not at fault.

The cyclist broke his leg, the woman says, whilst the police confirmed the 19-year-old cyclist suffered a serious leg injury.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, says she had to fork out £700 to pay for damage caused to her car, to protect her insurance policy's no claims bonus.

She had visited St Margaret's Retail Park in Stratton on January 9 after finishing work.

When she approached Gablecross roundabout on leaving the complex, she says a cyclist hit the side of her car.

“I heard the most horrendous noise and felt a bang on the passenger side of my car and I was horrified at the time,” she said.

“I was breathalysed and it showed nothing but the police didn’t take a statement off of me at all and purely went from the dash cam footage.

“It is disgusting as the cyclist was riding illegally with no lights on at all.”

The experience has haunted her ever since and the woman also pointed out the importance of wearing the correct protection and clothing when cycling at night.

“I’ve not been back since. I want awareness to be put out there that this sort of thing can occur,” said the driver.

“I’m concerned that the people who use bikes for work don’t spend money on protective clothing and lights. He wasn’t even wearing a helmet, dark clothing, it is reckless.

“I’m upset and I’m more wary of driving now and it’s something that could have been totally avoided,” she said.

“The police response is absolutely shocking and no prosecution has happened, and instead, I’ve had to fork out for my own car’s insurance.

“I have found the whole experience harrowing.”

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: “On January 9, 2023, we received a report of an RTC between a car and a cyclist at the Gablecross roundabout near St Margaret’s Retail Park, Swindon.

“The cyclist, a 19-year-old man, suffered a serious injury to his leg.

“No action was taken against either party.”
