BRITAIN'S top boxing promoter has backed Swindon sensation Jamie Cox to follow in the footsteps of some of his greatest proteges - by one day lifting the world title.

The man who masterminded the rise to the top of some of the sport's best now claims Cox can be the latest one off the production line after watching him ease to his sixth straight professional win in Birmingham on Saturday night.

Frank Warren, Cox's manager and promoter, watched from ringside as the Swindonian outclassed Stourport journeyman Billy Smith before claiming his boy done well'.

While the night's main event, Amir Khan versus gutsy Mancunian Michael Gomez, thrilled a packed National Indoor Arena, Cox did enough to impress his own army of fans in his first ever six-round bout.

Warren said: "Jamie is one of the best talents in England at the moment and I'm delighted to have been able to sign him.

"It has always been my policy to pick up the best young fighters in the country, and in snapping up Jamie, I'm following in that tradition.

"He can go all the way and become a world champion."

A comprehensive points victory may have left Cox a little frustrated, with Smith seemingly reluctant to get involved in a fight, but for Warren all the signs of his potential are clear to see.

He said: "Believe me Jamie's style is suited to the pro game. I'd been watching him even before he won gold in the Commonwealth Games and I'd been excited by what I'd seen.

"It's like when I watched Naz, Nigel Benn and Joe Calzaghe when they were amateurs. You would look at them and know they had what it takes.

"As long as Jamie lives the life then he will continue to adapt well to the professional ranks. It's a totally different sport, but his style is made for this."
