A Swindon costume maker has revealed her most spinetingling designs including a cloak made from real bones.

Rebecca Martin from Old Town has been designing costumes for the last decade and has recently delved into masks.

She sells her creations overseas for live shows, music videos and more, but her dream is to do the job full-time.

“Last year local theatre company Wrong Shoes reached out and commissioned me to make some masks and costumes,” said Rebecca.

“Horror and fantasy are my expertise so they asked for that and the masks were really well received so I was encouraged to do this professionally.

“I work in a school with my full-time job but I work on the designing on evenings and weekends because I would love to do it as a full-time gig.”

The 29-year-old now sells her work throughout the country and beyond with some masks even making their way to the USA.

“The masks are the most difficult thing I have ever done but I surprised myself through trial and error by creating something that I thought looked really good,” said Rebecca.

“I ship my work worldwide and it has reached LA and Indianapolis which I am very proud of and the first sale I had was to a music producer who ordered three masks and I was over the moon.

“When she received them, she was very impressed and ordered even more which was a big compliment to me for my first sale.”

Rebecca's love for horror first started as a child with her exposure to the genre’s films as well as trick or treating.

“I absolutely love horror and have always enjoyed Halloween the most out of all of the seasons,” she said.

“Since I was young, the occult and horror always interested me and I watched so many films with my favourites including ‘The Exorcist’ and all of Tim Burton’s work.”

Rebecca also revealed that her favourite creation actually featured real bones in the design.

“The costumes all depend on the brief but most actors do a lot of moving in their productions so I use a lot of breathable fabrics,” she said.

“It is purely based on what the clients want but if it is a historical costume, I like to do my research and keep it as accurate as possible.

“The most fun I have ever had creating a costume was making a cloak by boiling real meat bones while using leatherwork.”
