A boxing gym and community fitness centre is reopening in a new location later this month.

The team that runs Scrappers Gym has settled into new premises on Paddington Drive after being given notice to move out of the back of the 24Hr Gym in Langley Road which it had called home since 2013.

Originally formed in the old West Swindon Farepak Hampers building in 2011, the centre provides fitness sessions for people with disabilities and poor mental health.

During the last 12 years, the group of volunteer coaches has supported more than 25,000 five-to-24-year-olds and more than 30,000 adults in the Swindon area.

A new chapter in the gym’s history will begin on Monday, September 25 when it officially reopens in Unit 5, Callenders.

A spokesperson for the team said: “After months of anticipation, Scrappers Gym is thrilled to announce its long-awaited reopening.

“With a strong commitment to health, fitness, and community, the gym is excited to welcome back all our service users and new enthusiasts to the world of boxing and fitness.”

The centre will be able to run four sessions per week, for now.

Mondays feature boxing classes for five-to-eight-year-olds from 6pm to 6.45pm and similar sessions for eight-to-14-year-olds from 7pm to 8pm.

The sessions with children and young people are run and supervised by fully qualified boxing trainers and focus on boxing skills and techniques with elements of fitness and cardio work.

Wednesdays offer beginner boxing skills such as technical boxing drills, footwork and fitness for anyone aged 16 or over from 6pm to 7pm.

Fridays including agility and fitness sessions for people with disabilities from 11am to 12pm. These unique sessions are being held to address the need for people with disabilities to engage in regular exercise, with the aim to get fit and improve self-esteem, confidence, co-ordination, balance and agility.

Due to increased overheads, all sessions will cost £5 per person per session.

Scrappers' spokesperson added: “We are looking to recruit more volunteer Boxing and Fitness coaches to help us build our team and inspire people to be more active, develop new skills and create a strong and encouraging community of peers.

“If you have a few hours a week spare to help deliver sessions, please email olivia@scrapstore.co.uk

“We would love to hear from anyone that would like to get involved and join the Scrappers Gym Team.”
