Residents have been left horrified after the door to a public toilet was kicked in and urine sprayed over the facilities.

Boroughfields toilets, near to Costa Coffee in Royal Wootton Bassett, were broken into on Saturday, December 16, between 6pm and 7.15pm, and the Town Council says it is not the first time this has happened.

“The door was kicked in, breaking the automatic locking system and door frame, and the inside area trashed,” said Mark Hopkins, Chief Officer of Royal Wootton Bassett Town Council.

“Urine was sprayed everywhere, especially on the baby changing unit.”

A member of the Town Council Grounds Team who attended the toilets that evening spotted the vandalism and was able to secure the door and report the incident to 101.

But local residents, who say public services such as these are needed, have been left disgusted by the state of the toilets which face repeated vandalism.

“We are one of the few councils that still provide this service, but vandalism has stopped so many. This is encouraging those that set the budget to remove the toilets,” said Julie Buchanan.

“One of the few name and shame posts that I would back. I do think the vandals should be involved in the repairs at least,” she added.

“Absolutely disgusting behaviour,” commented Ali Potter.

“Would this be kids? If so parents must be so proud of their little darlings.”

Although the mess was cleared by the council’s grounds team on Monday morning, both toilets have now been locked to the public as they await repairs.

The accessible toilet remains open, and signage has gone up informing users of ‘ongoing vandalism.’

This is not the first time that these toilets have been vandalised, as on June 8, 2023, Wiltshire Police issued a statement regarding criminal damage to the toilets caused by two men on bikes.

The men kicked the doors multiple times causing damage to the locks which cost the council approximately £350 to replace.

The same toilets were also vandalised in June 2022, with excrement being smeared on the toilet, floor and surfaces and graffiti left on the walls.

“The repairs to the damage, the clean up, and the investigation by us and the police all have an impact on public funds,” explained Mr Hopkins.

“If you know anything about this criminal damage, or witnessed anything on Saturday evening, please contact the police on 101 or email the Town Council.”
