Supermarket chain Sainsbury's has denied problems with their fuel at petrol stations in Swindon, despite residents reporting problems.

The issues, reportedly causing juddering and breakdowns shortly after refuelling at both of the town's Sainsbury's petrol stations, were reported to the Adver just one week after the supermarket chain confirmed that fuel at a garage in Chippenham was ‘contaminated’.

One week on, several Swindon locals who have filled up on diesel at Sainsbury’s across the town have reported similar issues and warning signs.

"On Saturday morning I filled up at Stratton Sainsbury's before starting my community shift," one nurse told the Advertiser.

"When I drove down the A419 the car was juddering and the noise coming off my engine was horrendous - I thought my car was going to blow up.

"I slowed down and dropped a gear and the noise subsided, but the car is still juddering now," she said.

"I just want to get it to half a tank so I can fill it with more normal diesel to hopefully dilute what's in there."

But the local nurse isn't the only one who has noticed issues after filling up at Sainsbury's.

“After filling up with diesel in Stratton Sainsbury's, I’ve just had a ‘check diesel filter’ warning light appear. Could be just a coincidence though,” added Ben Atherton.

“I filled up half a tank on Wednesday and within an hour the orange engine warning light has come on,” said Ashley Dodds, who filled up at Sainsbury’s in Bridgemead.

But despite the multiple reports of diesel problems at Swindon Sainsbury's which have caused car juddering and breakdowns, the supermarket has denied there is an issue.

"We have not received any reports of diesel contamination in the area," said a spokesperson for Sainsbury's.

In early February, several motorists in Chippenham who had filled up on unleaded in Chippenham around the same time claimed that their vehicles broke down or started “juddering”.

The milky-looking fuel was found to have been contaminated with water and one couple were told it would cost them at least £399 for specialists to drain the fuel.

“We have received a small number of complaints from customers who used the unleaded pumps at our Chippenham petrol filling station on Wednesday afternoon,” said a spokesperson for Sainsbury's.

“We will keep our customers updated and we’re sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.”
