A public campaign to save the Oasis Leisure Centre sports hall and music venue thought to have given the famous rock band its name has stepped up a gear.

The Save Oasis Swindon campaign is staging a protest at the North Star venue on Sunday, and is being joined by various sporting groups that also feel strongly that the hall should remain part of the centre when it is refurbished by leaseholders SevenCapital.

Some of the groups attending include  SN1 Quads, Swindon Skate Social and Wiltshire Roller Derby.

A spokesperson said: "We'll be having a skate-based protest to demand the Oasis hall is kept.

"We'll be telling both Swindon Borough Council and SevenCapital we won't let our leisure facilities be destroyed.

"In a matter of months, SevenCapital will be bringing forward a planning application which will see the Oasis Hall demolished and replaced by two pitches!"

The protest will be running from 2-4pm and members of the public are also being encouraged to show their support and even bring a pair of skates.

"All other Swindon sports clubs and groups are welcome to attend the protest to save a hall at the Oasis. Bring your sports kit to wear, bring your rackets, bring your bowls, boxing gloves, musical instruments, bring your nets. Have a game in the car park," the spokesperson added.
