A mum of two who regularly goes horseriding with her children near Swindon says drivers regularly speed past her and shout abuse.

Emma Oldland told the Adver she is ‘frightened’ and regularly fears for her children’s and her own safety when out on the roads.

“I ride out mostly around Wroughton and up towards Barbury Castle with my two children who are aged 10 and seven and have their own horses,” she said.

“Recently I have had so many incidents of people shouting out the windows at me and speeding past when I signal for them to slow down past the horses.

“I have had people getting out of their cars and swearing at me in front of my children.

“So many people continue to speed past even when they see the children on the horses and they will leave no space and drive so close to them as well," she added.

“It's quite frankly dangerous and I have seen it so many times where there have been nasty incidents and even deaths."

As of January 2022, the Highway Code has been updated and legally vehicles must not pass horses at any more than 10mph.

But according to Emma, there’s not enough education about this and many dangerous drivers are simply unaware.

“It happens regularly and can be really frightening for me both as a horserider myself and as a mother,” she added.

“A lot of people don’t realise that the code is there because horses can’t see behind them and so get easily spooked and can throw a rider off or run in front of the car.

“If you’re going to come out to the countryside then you need to be aware and respectful of things like horses.

“But I think people don’t know that the speed limit actually changes near horses because it’s often not taught much in driving lessons or spoken about.”

The Swindon horserider was keen to point out that many drivers do slow down and abide by the Highway Code when passing Emma and her children on the roads, but the number that don't is just too high.

Now the mother of two is urging Swindon drivers to brush up on the rules and help keep horseriders and motorists safe.

“Lots of people are respectful and do follow the rules, but I really think there’s too many that don’t," she said.

“There needs to be more education about how to drive with horses on the road."
