The following cases were heard at Swindon Magistrates Court this week.

GORSE HILL: Scott Downes, of Argyle Street, has been sentenced for thefts from a shop.

The 46-year-old pleaded guilty to stealing alcohol worth £110 from the Orbital Shopping Park Asda on January 10, 2024, and returning to take alcohol worth £70 on February 8.

He also stole bottles of spirits worth £221 from the Marlborough Waitrose on January 31, and returned to steal stole two bottles of Remy Martin and one bottle of Circo to the value of £137 from the supermarket on February 5.

He has been jailed for nine weeks due to the seriousness of the offences, the fact that he has been recalled, that he committed these offences while on a suspended sentence order, as well as his significant previous convictions and previous lack of compliance with probation. 

The defendant must also pay £538 in compensation. 

SWINDON: Two defendants from Luton have been sentenced for shoplifting from Swindon's TK Maxx on the same day.

Argentina Anghel, of Bury Park Road, and Marcela Rostas, of Cromwell Road, each pleaded guilty to taking clothing and jewellery worth £126.93 from the store on April 16, 2024.

Anghel, 37, must pay £33.98 in compensation and a fine of £288 while 19-year-old Rostas must pay £42.50 in compensation plus an £80 fine. Both defendants must also pay £42.50 in court costs.

PARK SOUTH: Josephine Namekye, of Purley Avenue, has been sentenced for driving without due care and attention.

The 30-year-old pleaded guilty to committing the offence in a Volkswagen Polo on Croft Road on September 3, 2023.

She received a fine of £440 and six penalty points on her driving licence, and must also pay £90 in court costs plus £176 to fund victim services.

MOTORWAY: Harri Ward, of High Street in St Clears, Camarthen, Wales, has been sentenced for driving without due care and attention.

The 23-year-old pleaded guilty to committing the offence in a Scania on the M4 near Swindon on July 31, 2023.

He received eight penalty points on his driving licence and a fine of £850, and must also pay £340 in court costs plus another £340 to fund victim services.

MALMESBURY: Kim Power, of Stroud Road in Bristol, has been sentenced for drug driving.

The 60-year-old pleaded guilty to driving a Renault Clio along the B4040 in Charlton on December 21, 2022, when  the proportion of a controlled drug, namely Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), in her blood, namely not less than 2.9 micrograms of drug per litre of blood, exceeded the specified limit.

She has been banned from driving for 12 months, fined £80, and ordered to pay £85 in court costs plus £32 to fund victim services.

ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT: Ross Dawson, of Bessemer Close in Swindon, has been sentenced for driving without due care and attention.

The 34-year-old pleaded guilty to committing the offence in a Ford Transit on the A3102 in Royal Wootton Bassett on October 13, 2023.

He received a £266 fine and five penalty points on his driving licence, and must also pay £85 in court costs plus £106 to fund victim services.

DEVIZES: Timothy Birtwhistle, of Saxon Close in Market Lavington, has been sentenced for drink driving.

The 43-year-old pleaded guilty to driving a Fiat Panda along the A342 on April 2, 2024, after consuming so much alcohol that the proportion of it in his breath, namely 48 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, exceeded the prescribed limit.

He has been banned from driving for 14 months, fined £120, and ordered to pay £85 in court costs plus £48 to fund victim services.
