A historic house in a Wiltshire town has been almost completely destroyed by a fire.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said multiple fire engines from across the county rushed to a roof fire at a two-storey building in Church Street, Bradford on Avon, just after 2am on Sunday, May 5.

Firefighters used hose reels, main lines, and portable pumps to put out the flames, while also trying to salvage belongings and damping down hot spots in the roof.

The fire service - who still had fire crews on site until Sunday afternoon - added that nobody was believed to have been hurt, that approximately 75 per cent of the property has been "destroyed" by the fire, and an investigation into its cause has begun.

A spokesperson said: "Firefighters were called at 2.13am to reports of a roof fire in Church Street, Bradford on Avon.

"At the height of the incident seven fire engines attended (from Bradford on Avon, Trowbridge x2, Corsham, Warminster, Devizes, and Chippenham).

"Firefighters used hose reels, main lines, and light portable pumps to extinguish the fire. Firefighters also worked hard to salvage belongings from the property and thankfully no one is believed to have been injured.

"The incident is ongoing and three fire engines are currently on scene dampening down. Approximately 75 per cent of the property has been destroyed by the fire and a fire investigation is underway to establish the cause."

It later emerged the fire took place at Kingston Place and photos show the roof has been badly damaged, there are charred remains outside the property and debris is strewn about the place.

Some Bradford on Avon residents said they were woken in the night due to the smell of "acrid smoke".
